It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant). The United States Center for Disease Control provides updated guidelines and travel recommendations for the prevention and treatment of malaria in different parts of the world.

Tests. Blood tests for monitoring of methtrexate consist of CBC and platelet count as well as liver function tests to keep track of potential liver and bone marrow damage. The tests can be done every 3 to 6 months or as needed as determined by any symptoms. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine rarely causes blood problems but an annual eye exam is important. I've been on plaquenil for over 6 years, then last year i got a letter saying that i needed to have a full blood count done every 3 months as I was on a DMARD drug, the plaquenil, as it can effect your blood. They also do a blood test to check my liver and kidneys too. A CMP blood test does not necessarily need special preparation. But in some cases, you may be required to fast, such as if you will undergo a glucose test. Depending upon the reason for the CMP test, you should fast from 10 to 12 hours prior to the blood extraction.

This medication is also used, usually with other medications, to treat certain auto-immune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) when other medications have not worked or cannot be used. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs.

Similarly, one study reported that 16 women who’d taken hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, or a combination of the agents, showed no improvement seven years after stopping drug therapy, and progression occurred in six of the cases. 2

Today it is recommended that every single person on Plaquenil get a visual field 10-2 test, plus one of the three other highly sensitive screening tests the FAF fundus autofluorescence imaging, the SD-OCT spectral domain optical coherence, or the multifocal electroretinogram mfERG,” Thomas says. The usual adult dose for treating malaria is 800 mg initially, followed by 400 mg 6-8 hours later and then 400 mg at 24 hours and 48 hours. The dose for malaria prevention is 400 mg every week starting 1 or 2 weeks before exposure and for 4 weeks after leaving the high risk area. The recommended adult dose for rheumatoid arthritis is 400-600 mg daily for 4-12 weeks followed by 200-400 mg daily. Plaquenil is an arthritis medication and an anti infectious agent. Uses Plaquenil is prescribed for Lupus, RA, Sjogren's Syndrome and Joint Pain and is mostly mentioned together with these indications.

Stopping plaquenil. DailyStrength I think even though they say it doesn't make a difference, I feel wierd if I don't take my plaquenil sometimes. Almost as if there is a little withdraw going on. I feel sluggish and more nauseated. It takes awhile to leave your system so really you shouldn't feel bad over two missed doses, but I can tell a difference.
