Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, which are used to decrease inflammation, pain and joint damage. While today it is used to treat autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, it was originally used as an anti-malaria drug. There is a small risk that hydroxychloroquine can damage your retina part of the eye, and this increases with long-term use and higher dosage. Your doctor will advise you on a safe dose to take according to your weight, and you will need to have regular monitoring of your eyes. Hydroxychloroquine has significantly less retinal toxicity and has largely replaced chloroquine as a treatment of inflammatory disease. Unfortunately, the retinal damage from these medications is largely irreversible, so it is critical to detect early retinal toxicity in the hopes of limiting the extent of visual loss. Sign/Symptoms

Taking hydroxychloroquine long-term or at high doses may cause irreversible damage to the retina of your eye. Hydroxychloroquine is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus.

May 24, 2017 First of all, it’s still unclear how exactly hydroxychloroquine causes eye toxicity. In a nutshell the outer layer of the retina gets damaged and then it deepens and spreads around the fovea. People tend not to notice anything at this stage.
