    Chloroquine and malaria prophylaxis

Begin 1-2 days before travel, daily during travel, and for 7 days after leaving. Factors that affect local malaria transmission patterns can change rapidly and from year to year, such as local weather conditions, mosquito vector density, and prevalence of infection.

Hydroxychloroquine vs doxycycline Kinetics of chloroquine

Usual Adult Dose for Malaria Prophylaxis. 500 mg chloroquine phosphate 300 mg base orally on the same day each week Comments -If possible, suppressive therapy should start 2 weeks prior to exposure; if unable to start 2 weeks before exposure, an initial loading dose of 1 g chloroquine phosphate. For patients taking chloroquine to prevent malaria Your doctor will want you to start taking this medicine 1 to 2 weeks before you travel to an area where there is a chance of getting malaria. This will help you to see how you react to the medicine. Areas with chloroquine-sensitive malaria include many Latin American countries where there is predominantly P. vivax malaria. Chloroquine-sensitive P. falciparum is present in the Caribbean and Central American countries west of the Panama Canal. For destinations where chloroquine-sensitive malaria is present, in addition to mosquito avoidance measures, the many effective prophylaxis options include chloroquine, atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine, and tafenoquine.

Several medications are available for chemoprophylaxis. When deciding which drug to use, consider specific itinerary, length of trip, cost of drug, previous adverse reactions to antimalarials, drug allergies, and current medical history. Information in these tables is updated regularly.4.

The blood concentrations of chloroquine and desethylchloroquine the major metabolite of chloroquine, which also has antimalarial properties were negatively associated with log antibody titers. Chloroquine taken in the dose recommended for malaria prophylaxis can reduce the antibody response to primary immunization with intradermal human diploid -cell rabies vaccine. Blood stage prophylaxis is the most common type of prophylaxis in use. Chloroquine, was the first drug in this group to be extensively used. It was introduced in the early 1950’s for the prevention of both falciparum and vivax malaria. While chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum appeared quite quickly, in the late 1950’s, chloroquine-resistant P. vivax presented only in the late 1980’s. Chloroquine and Proguanil are the preferred chemoprophylactic drugs against malaria in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Mefloquine can be given during the second and third trimesters if the situation demands. Mefloquine and doxycycline can be used in non-pregnant women with child bearing potential.

Anyone on Hydroxychloroquine plaquenil - Autoimmune. Plaquenil itself probably does not have a direct affect on your immune system - it is a DMARD and is not considered to be an immunosuppressant. However, many with active autoimmune diseases feel that they are not succeptible to many of the common viruses that they are exposed to - somewhat of a silver lining.
